Patients with periodontitis and its implications for implant success

There is some evidence that patients that have been treated for periodontitis may experience a higher rate of dental implant complications than non-periodontitis patients. According to research published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology¹ evidence is stronger for implant survival than implant success.

Serum calcium linked to periodontal disease progression

Serum calcium may be a risk factor in the progression of periodontal disease (PPD) in elderly patients, according to new research published in Gerodontology 2008, Mar 31.

The digital pioneers

In the past decade, the University of Adelaide, Australia, has become a leader in developing contemporary learning material in international projects with other universities. This, among many things, entails curriculum development and training and exchanging of staff and students. Recent initiatives include creating electronic interactive curricula for the newly established dental school at Sharjah University in Sharjah. Heading the initiative is Professor Vivian Burgess, former dean of the dental school and current associate dean international for the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Adelaide, Australia.

Growing the knowledge base

At the World Dental Congress in Dubai, the FDI announced the launch of initiatives such as the Young Speaker's Programme and the publication of guidelines for continuing professional development. Dr Julian Fisher, FDI Education and Scientific Affairs Manager, spoke to Marita Kritzinger about how the organization invests in knowledge transfer in the global oral health community.

Prioritizing global oral health

Themed 'Dental diversity in the land of tomorrow' the 2007 FDI World Dental Congress was key, not only for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Middle East, but for the world, as thousands of international delegates registered to attend. "We are confident that the overall turnout will likely be one of the largest in FDI history," said Dr MichÃ¨le Aerden, President of the FDI, at the official launch of the congress.
